Birdseye Cloth

I've been on a mission to eliminate as much trash from my life as possible and have gotten it down to very little (although I'm still amazed by how much I alone can generate sometimes). This is a DIY project I created for myself...

It started while I was reading an article about re-usables, hoping I'd find an alternative to cotton balls...no such luck, although it did talk about washable toilet paper (I just can't seem to bring myself there). So I began to brainstorm.

I bought a birdseye towel on sale for $2.00 and cut it into 4 inch squares. Then I folded them over twice and stitched them up. If I had a sewing machine I would have zigzag stitched them all.

I chose birdseye cloth because since that is what folks use to make cloth diapers, I thought they'd be nice and absorbent. They haven't softened up as much I thought they would but every washing breaks them down a little more. I find I like them this way though because they're a little exfoliating. I might eventually make some with flannel to have a softer alternative.

I made enough to have two per day for about 2 weeks (in case I get lazy with the laundry). I soak them in a little borax in a cup in between washes.

If you know of an existing product...or maybe you simply use a towel or rag? Please share!
