Yet another lunch at The Edinburgh Larder

Do you ever go somewhere to eat and just love it the second you walk through the door without really knowing why?  That's what I felt when entering The Edinburgh Larder...

Maybe it was because I could just feel the good energy in the place...the love for local, Scottish produce.  The love of food in general and the care that goes into preparing it...the very friendly staff.  It felt like home. Even the colors spoke to me.  Very calm and serene.  It felt delicious even before the first bite!

Sending out a huge thank you to my friend, Susan, for recommending it to us!

On top of the ingredients being local, organic or both, the food was delightfully simple and incredibly delicious.  Just the way I like it!  I love to cook that way when I'm at home so it was wonderful to be able to enjoy the same philosophy while out (and being in Scotland made it even better)!  We just sat back, enjoyed the sun streaming through the window and the beer, dear God, the beer...

We were lucky enough to get the same window table for both visits.  And we went back, twice more, to buy haggis oatcakes (no words, so good) and Scottish brie for snacks in the cottage. I found myself wishing I could work there! Or at least eat lunch there every day...

I'm trying to put myself back in that window seat. There we watched a man narrowly avoid a parking ticket and then exchanged relieved looks and a silly smile with him. Then a little girl came up to the window to wave at us...too charming for words.

When traveling, I always to want to eat local food, so while we were in town I scouted out restaurants that serve Scottish fare (traditional, fusion...whatever, I'm game).

Great Glen venison, pork and pepper salami with Anster cheese

This sandwich was TO DIE FOR. I was very excited by the Anster cheese, too, because I'd had it on Iona ;) Amazing.

Creelers hot smoked salmon with lemon mayonnaise

(I became a big fan of hot smoked salmon after stopping for lunch in Oban...this didn't disappoint either!)

It's such a treat to find places that create mindful food.  I also love how, for the most part, local and organic are much more expected and don't seem elitist. Everyone has the right to good food. Maybe I'm just a magnet for these places while in Scotland but so far I always feel surrounded by nourishing goodness when finding hotels or restaurants.

Embra

I realized later that I had been following them on Twitter for a while (I follow a lot of Edinburgh-based things, as you can imagine).  More Scottish serendipity for me.

I love their motto of "Good Mood Food."  It certainly put me in a good mood.

XO

Lee Ann . . . Once again your photos have a way of transporting us to places familiar or brand new.

In this case, I was taken back 28 years to a beautful day in Edinburgh. I
pushed Laurie in her wheelchair the full length of the Royal Mile, stopping at the Old Calton Burial Ground to see the memorial to Scottish American soldiers who died in the Civil War . . .the imposing statue of Abraham Lincoln freeing a slave.
