What I tend to do is come up with an idea, research recipes online and then go rogue. Sometimes I make it true to form once...but mostly I go my own way. I do that in a lot of areas lately ;) For my croutons, I bought a loaf of unsliced, brioche style bread from Fresh Direct's bakery and went from there. Originally I intended these as a topping for some butternut squash soup and quinoa but in the end I mostly ate them as a snack ;) Croutons were always one of those things I always just bought...but they can be kind of expensive (if you want organic and minimally processed) for a pretty small amount. Then I had a light bulb moment and thought... "Wait a moment, croutons are basically cubes of seasoned toast...surely I can make them!" And make them I did! I've been having these light bulb moments a lot lately...with shampoo, dish/laundry soap...etc. I find it all sort of fascinating, to tell the truth. And old fashioned. All the things we are conditioned to pick up at the store...when we really don't need to.
